How Quality was Judged
and 12 different brands of compatible cartridge to gauge toner cartridge performance, reliability, quality of color, and color consistency.
To prevent the results from being skewed, they used each brand of toner cartridge in several different brands of printers and randomly sampled the results to ensure that their studies would produce accurate test results.
Their tests produced the following results:
Just over 80% of the other brands had reliability problems.
Almost 1 out of every 6 non-HP toner cartridges failed prematurely or was useless right out of the box.
78% of the pages printed with off-brand cartridges were judged to be of poor quality from fading, smudges, lines, and color shifts.
That the other brands had a significantly higher percentage of color inconsistency over the life of the cartridge.
Only 2% of HP toner cartridges were defective or failed to produce high quality pages.
As the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for." HP toner cartridge cost a bit more than compatible off-brands but your extra investment is rewarded with consistent reliability, performance, and quality of reproduction.
